It’s been all change in recent times at John Grimes Sawmills Ltd with a new chapter set to be written in the Midland firm’s 30 year plus history.

Founded by John Grimes and incorporated in 1990, JGS was sold in 2010 and has just moved from their site on Cable Street in Wolverhampton to a much larger 2 acre site in the city on Racecourse Road off Dunstall Lane.

Operations Director Arvid Nielsen, a veteran of almost four decades in the timber trade, was appointed in January 2012

Arvid explained :“The new site benefits from a 38,000 sq ft building, which will house our mill as well as our manufacturing, dipping and drying facilities. Raw materials and finished panel stock will be stored in the external yards.

“We currently employ 23 with the majority involved in the manufacturing process backed up by an admin and sales team of 4.

“We are wholesale manufacturers of fence panels.  We produce Feather Edge, double Waney Lap, single Waney Lap, close board panels and trellis in pressure treated, gold and brown dipped.  We also produce picket fence, screens, board gates and some ‘bespoke’ panels to customer specifications.  Being a manufacturing wholesaler, we do not sell direct to the public and we do not offer a fitting service.  All of the wood used in our panels is grown in the British Isles and being certified, we produce an FSC Chain of Custody product, which is robust and of high quality.  A consumer only has to compare our panel specifications with those of some other manufacturers and we are sure that they will acknowledge that we produce a sturdy product.

“Interest in our pressure treated range has increased significantly over the past year reflected in sales growth. Our pressure treated lap panels have to be our best seller.

“We’ve had a few ‘steady as you go’ years in recent times that have given us the time and opportunity to focus on our relocation. Our attention is now focused on

2018 and the future.

“We service builders merchants from the East Midlands down to the South East and South West. Over the course of 2018 we will be expanding our market place to new counties. When you manufacture a quality product it makes sense to seek out new markets,” added Arvid.

JGS has been working with Marlow-based Koppers Performance Chemicals for several years.

Arvid continued: “My experience with Koppers and its previous incarnations predates JGS and stretches back to 1995. The team at Koppers may have changed over the years but their sound ethics and customer focused operating principles have remained the same.

“The new site at Racecourse Road sees the introduction of ‘state of the art’ dipping systems. It’s a far cry from the method used at Cable Street!

“Automation is key to the whole process, so we can now carry out precise mixing of our dipping solutions with a single, push button operation of the

plant. Safe and effortless operation was our goal and that is what we are set to achieve,” he added.

There’s a lot going on at JGS but with a new HQ and treatment facilities there’s a lot to be positive about!
