MVF and M&M Timber strengthening the Shield fencing range

Mole Valley Farmers ( is delighted to be working in partnership with M&M Timber. M&M Timber now supply the exclusive 15 year warranty Shield fencing range to the Mole Valley Farmers group.

M&M Timber operates from a 25 acre site where all its items are manufactured.  It is one of the UK’s leading businesses in machine rounded timber products and supplier of choice to the agricultural, utility, commercial, landscaping, land owner and play market sectors.  The operation includes sawmilling, assembly, storage and distribution, all on one site.

All Shield timber products are sourced from sustainable raw materials. Timbers are carefully selected from certified, well managed forests and other controlled sources, before being manufactured and finished at the Worcestershire sawmill. M&M Timber’s responsibility to the environment maximises the longevity of their products and minimises the amount of timber harvested. Every stage of the manufacturing process from responsible purchasing, debarking, machine rounding, profiling and manufacturing, is undertaken with care.

All Shield timbers are treated with wood preservative, which is forced deep into the vulnerable sapwood cells under a proven, high pressure treatment process. The wood preservative has high performance credentials, particularly for ground contact timbers protecting the wood against brown rots. The resulting timbers are high performance products, with assured long term protection against decay and insect attack.

The Shield post and strainers feature a scientifically designed incising process for increased protection delivering a ‘zone of confidence’ at the critical area where the post is at most risk of decay.  During production, the machine rounded timbers pass through a purpose designed incising head.  This helps improve treatable surface area, with a band of consistent and uniformed incisions reaching a depth of up to 6mm, which can span up to two thirds of the post’s length. Incising also eases surface tension and reduces the likelihood of surface cracking.

The timber is stacked to maintain air flow and even drying, before being loaded into state of the art drying kilns which each have a capacity of 180m3 (approximately six  artic lorry loads of timber). Timbers are kilned down to 40% moisture for spruce and 30% for pine. Together, the process enables the resulting posts and strainers to deliver top quality performance for in-ground applications lasting three times longer than standard timber posts, supported by a 15 year warranty.

Ian Hedden, Product Manager for Mole Valley Farmers explains:

“We are delighted that our working relationship with M&M Timber has evolved into an even closer partnership.  We have been carrying the Shield range now for 4 years and are proud that we can offer our customers an unique, two part warranty which not only offers 100% post for post replacement but also offers a refund on installation costs, based on a sliding scale.”

M&M Timber was established in 1984 as a manufacturer and supplier of machine rounded agricultural fencing to a network of agricultural co-operatives in the Midlands and Wales.  The business, based in Worcestershire, is a division of the Forest Garden Group, the UK’s leading and most trusted manufacturer and distributor of quality wooden garden products for over 50 years.

Commenting on the supply agreement with Mole Valley Farmers, Guy Grainger, CEO of Forest Garden says,

“We are proud to have been given the opportunity to partner with Mole Valley Farmers in the supply of agricultural fencing. Our group has a recognised and respected 50 year track record through even the most exceptional of demand periods.  We have achieved this by offering a fully integrated supply chain from the moment a tree is felled, through to delivery.

“In the last 12 months we have invested over £3 million in upgrading our sawmills, increasing both processing speeds and capacities. This has allowed us to now produce machined round timber at our mill in Lockerbie and upgrade our existing line in Clows Top, Worcestershire.”
