Awards showcase excellence in wood protection

The 2017 WPA Awards for wood protection excellence took place at Breadsall Priory Hotel, Derby on 5 April. The event was attended by over 70 WPA members and guests from the treated wood supply chain. Now in their third year the WPA Awards are showcase for all that’s best about the wood protection industry and the 2017 Awards turned out to be the most hotly contested yet. The judging panel comprised TTJ Magazine editor Stephen Powney, Ed Suttie from BRE and WPA Director Steve Young and the 2017 Awards sponsor was Lonza.

Fire Retardant

WINNER: Banyan Wharf Development

The Banyan Wharf development by Regal Homes is a stunning showcase for the use timber cladding on hi-rise property.

The specification called for the use of western red cedar with leach resistant Lonza Non-Com Exterior fire retardant treatment to provide the long term fire protection required by Building Regulatons. The cladding was supplied by Bartram Timber.

Bond Timber for the Pirate Play Ship at Trevalgan Touring Park, Cornwall

WINNER: NORclad

Southmead Hospital, Bristol

European Redwood cladding and car park screening pressure treated with Koppers Micronised preservative and Brunnea pigment to deliver a 30 year service life.

Design brief called for innovative screening of concrete car park to complement the cladding on the access building. Over 2,000 bespoke design treated fins were installed.

The judges were impressed not only by the scale and innovative design of this project but also the fact that wood was used to soften and screen an ugly concrete structure.

Treated Wood Trader of the Year

Winner: M&M Timber

An early adopter of the WPA Benchmark quality scheme, incising timber before treatment and the need to educate buyers about performance expectations M&M Timber understands success is built onquality products and service.

Their innovative approach to segmenting and targeting the market for treated wood with specific branded products and using social media as a communication tool has contributed significantly to winning the WPA Award for treated wood trader of the year 2017.
