Removing Posts Can Be Just as Challenging as Installing Them

For fencing and landscaping contractors, the focus is often on installation. New fence lines, tree planting schemes, estate improvements and temporary works all rely on stakes, posts and ground anchors to get the job done.

Yet once those materials have reached the end of their working life, removing them can often be one of the most physically demanding and time-consuming tasks on site.

Whether replacing damaged fencing, clearing redundant tree stakes, removing edging pins or pulling self-set saplings, extraction is frequently carried out using manual methods, improvised levers or heavy machinery. Each approach has its place, but they can involve significant physical effort, create unnecessary ground disturbance or simply prove impractical where access is limited.

A new extraction system launched across the UK and Europe in May 2026 aims to offer contractors another option – Xtracto.

Xtracto is an impact wrench powered extraction tool, designed and manufactured in Canada, that uses controlled vertical pulling force to remove a wide variety of ground-fixed materials. Rather than relying on dedicated hydraulic equipment, the system works with compatible professional cordless impact wrenches already used by many contractors, making it an easy addition to an existing toolkit.

The interchangeable hook system enables users to remove tree stakes, fence posts, edging pins and self-set saplings using the same tool. By applying a controlled pulling force directly in line with the material being extracted, the system helps reduce manual handling while limiting disruption to finished ground, an important consideration for landscapers working on completed sites or sensitive planting schemes.

For fencing contractors, the ability to remove old timber posts and strainers without excessive digging can help simplify repair and replacement work. Landscapers may find it equally valuable for removing temporary tree stakes following establishment, clearing timber edging or lifting steel pins after project completion. Estate managers and forestry teams can also benefit from a portable extraction solution that can be carried to remote locations without the need for larger machinery.

Following its launch earlier this year, Xtracto will be demonstrated throughout an extensive autumn exhibition programme, beginning at Groundsfest on 9-10 September, before moving to the APF Exhibition from 24-26 September.

The team will then exhibit at The Showman’s Show on 21 and 22 October, before concluding the season at Festivak in the Netherlands, where Xtracto will continue its introduction to the European market.

Visitors to each event will be able to see live demonstrations and discuss how the system could fit into their own operations.
