KEEPING THE WOLVES FROM THE DOOR WITH HAMPTON STEEL
The versatility of Hampton Steel fencing demonstrated for the Little Zoo’s newly rescued wolves’ enclosure.
The Little Zoo is a donation-reliant charity dedicated to rescuing and providing homes for wolves and exotic animals.
The arrival of six new wolves and the need to rehouse their growing wolf population, meant that a new compound was required. By doing this the security and well-being of these magnificent creatures could be ensured and enhanced.
The Little Zoo approached Hampton Steel Ltd., one of the UK’s leading specialist manufacturers of woven steel wire fencing, and together they identified the most appropriate solution for their purposes.
Hampton Steel, who had worked with other zoos in the past, was more than pleased to assist, comfortable in the knowledge that the answer would lie in Hampton Steel’s extensive range of products, practically all of which are manufactured at its factories in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, which includes:
- Sentinel® galvanised hinge joint fencing, barbed wire, fencing staples and line wires with the longer life green passivate coated alternatives Rylock® and Rylock One®.
- Hampton NET™ fixed knot fencing together with its longer-life green passivate alternative Hampton NET™ Green.
- Hexagonal wire netting.
- Hampton Steel’s own designed and patented long-life metal fence post system Strainerlok® and Versalok®. Both are guaranteed for 30 years (terms and conditions apply), manufactured from high tensile steel and offer an excellent long-life alternative to traditional timber fence post system. Strainerlok® strainer posts are lightweight yet incredibly strong and both angle and box options are available. Versalok® intermediate fence posts are truly versatile accommodating any pattern of woven wire fencing.
Understanding it was important to choose the best fencing option and combined with the durability that would ensure the safety of the wolves whilst in captivity, it was decided that a combination of Hamptons own manufactured Chain Link fencing together with Hampton’s Sentinel® Line Wire would provide the perfect compound which gives the wolves a visual and physical barrier, enabling them to recognize and respect their territorial limits.

Gary Emery, Founder of the Little Zoo Charity knew immediately that Hampton Steel was the best supplier for the job “The welfare of rescued wolves relies heavily on providing a suitable habitat that mimics their natural environment to the greatest extent possible. Hampton Steel are a UK manufacturer that provides the best wire fencing systems and worked with us in striking a balance between visitor security and the wolves’ welfare.”
“Adequate wire fencing allows for optimal ventilation and unobstructed visibility, enabling the wolves to maintain a sense of connection with their surroundings. The fencing should be designed to prevent injuries or entanglement, ensuring the animals’ physical wellbeing.” Said Gary Emery.
The Little Zoo, based in Wiltshire which was founded in 2010 by Gary Emery has for many years provided a sanctuary for exotic pets; many unwanted, or which have proved too hard to look after for their original owners. The Little Zoo is a Registered Charity (England and Wales no. 1143494) which depends on the kindness of public support, they receive no government funding to support the running of the charity.
Hampton Steel Limited was incorporated in 1989. Mark Johnson, Managing Director of Hampton Steel explained the importance and benefit of choosing superior quality fencing and its benefits in an application like this, “All the raw materials we use and the products we manufacture and supply are produced to recognised standards. Our fencing material is resistant to corrosion and deterioration over time, with minimal maintenance requirements. This ensures the longevity of the enclosure, minimizing the need for disruptive repairs and replacements that could potentially stress the wolves and additional cost to the Little Zoo charity.”
“In the twenty years since we decided to start manufacturing our own wire fencing products, we continued to invest and push the boundaries in terms of innovation and customer satisfaction. Quality, reliability, and impeccable service levels have and will remain of the utmost importance to us.” said Mark Johnson.
Hampton Steel supplies fencing and wire products for agriculture, horses, animal husbandry, forestry, soft fruit faming, viticulture, security, infrastructure and many more applications.
