OUT WITH TIMBER, IN WITH COMPOSITE FENCING

Composite fencing panels are the new go-to solution for fencing. Offering low maintenance and long-lasting results at an affordable price, they are the ultimate fit and forget fencing option. Here, John Abernethie, Founder and Chairman of Birkdale, explains why you should forget about timber solutions and simply switch to composite.
For many years, timber panels have been the number one choice for fencers and homeowners across the UK. Due to its low upfront cost, ease of installation and appealing aesthetic, timber has always seemed like the obvious option for fencing. However, after significant developments in the industry, composite panels have established themselves as a low maintenance, longer lasting and modern solution.
Longevity
One of the most significant drawbacks of timber is its tendency to rot, leading to a limited lifespan. Even after regular treatment and maintenance, timber fence panels usually only last for up to 10 years, or less if they are damaged by strong winds. On the other hand, composite panels are made from a blend of plastics and natural materials, making them far sturdier than timber. DuraPost VISTA® composite fencing panels are manufactured with a timber-look tongue and groove design, but unlike timber they will not rot or warp and are engineered to resist all types of extreme weather. This is because they are made with strong and sustainable wood-plastic composite (WPC) that is also UV stabilised so that they can retain their integrity for each season without the need for any annual treatment. For these reasons, Birkdale guarantees its composite fence panel products for up to 15 years.
Aesthetics
An additional drawback of timber panelling is the need to treat it using paints, stains or protective seals to maintain structural performance and its aesthetic. Not only can the cost of this add up in the long run, but it can also be labour-intensive. As DuraPost VISTA® composite panels are UV stabilised, the colour of the panel will not fade overtime, instead maintaining its fresh appearance year after year. Furthermore, panels can complement any existing landscape design as they are available in three versatile colour options bespoke to the DuraPost® range – Oyster, Graphite and Teak.
Installation
Just like timber panels, DuraPost VISTA® panels offer an easy installation method due to their lightweight design.
Once the DuraPost® fence posts are in place, lower the bottom infill into position and secure at each end of the bay. Then slot the aluminium infills into the DuraPost® posts – these will hold the panel in place. The DuraPost VISTA® panels should then slot into the aluminium infills, inserted with the tongue facing up. The panels should be secured through the post and directly into the aluminium infill. This process is then repeated with the remaining panels in order to finish the bay and the top infill rail can be slotted into position and secured. If fitting a post cap, the DuraPost® will need to protrude 15mm above the top rail.
With greater longevity, aesthetics and an easy installation process, composite panels provide all the desired benefits of timber, without any of the drawbacks, making them one of the most reliable fencing solutions on the market.
