 HAMISH EMBRACES THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Caithness-based fencing contractor Hamish Sinclair has been helping to shape the landscapes of northern Scotland for four decades.

Based at Latheron 17 miles south of Wick, Hamish has embraced the power of social media with a regular flow of Facebook posts that showcase high quality, completed fencing projects.

Hamish explained: “I try to put content on my page that reflects what I do and it seems to do the trick. Every little helps and weekly updates are helping to increase engagement and awareness. It definitely contributes towards bringing new business in.

“I supply and install all types and styles of fencing for a wide range of customers from estate landowners to individual homeowners. I also repair, remove and maintain existing fencing across this part of the world. That’s becoming an increasing part of my job as we see more and more posts failing the test of time.

“Most of my time is spent doing stock and deer fencing although I’m occasionally asked to do some garden and security work.

“It’s a job I’ve enjoyed since the very start and I get a big kick out of working away in the great outdoors. Each project is different and come with their own unique challenges.

“I’m now in my fortieth year of fencing and I think it seems to get easier and easier the older I get. The machinery we use these days, be it knockers, augers, Quickfencers, quads etc make it all the more easier than 40 years ago when everything was dug and carried by hand.”

Hamish, alongside twin brother Bruce, was last profiled just over two years ago in the pages of Fencing News.

“Most of my work is done alone but Bruce joins me now and then for jobs that require a bit more effort.

“The work has continued to flow in over the last two years, mainly around the coastline of Caithness, and this past year has been a very productive one given the dry weather we’ve had. In fact, I’d say 2025 has been the warmest, dryest year I’ve experienced doing this job and I can honestly say it’s been a pleasure.

“The terrain can be very varied up here with some of the ground soft and easy to work with and other areas proving to be harder and more testing.

“That’s where my Bryce knocker comes into its own. It’s some piece of kit and an invaluable tool to have up here. It takes a real hammering and I’ve been working with it for the past six or seven years.

“I used to have one attached to a tracked machine but it’s now fixed to the back of my tractor. It makes the whole operation a wee bit more mobile and flexible.

“I also operate a custom-built Quickfencer along with a Solonetter which makes the many deer fencing jobs I do that much easier. It’s very handy!” added Hamish who is into his football and used to play and referee back in the day.

Needless to say, he was ‘over the moon’ with Scotland’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup!

Both Hamish and Bruce hail from solid farming stock and both brothers understand the fencing game and the pressures faced by farmers in this part of the world. They both set up in business in 1984 and Hamish has no plans to pack it in just yet.

“I’ve still got a few years left in me. It’s a good life and, whatever the weather might throw at us, we both enjoy the day-to-day workload,” concluded Hamish.

From failing posts to Facebook posts, you expect Hamish will be making the most of life for a long time to come!
