A VIRTUOUS CIRCLE WITH PLASTECOWOOD

If you’re looking for the perfect example of the circular economy in action then look no further than Rhyl-based Plastecowood.
Case in point: Plastecowood receive recyclable plastic from numerous leading supermarkets and reprocess the waste into a variety of fencing solutions and systems that are then sold back to the retailer for use on their many sites or to CSR / ESG projects. This fast-growing business was founded in 2014 and supplies an increasing number of timber and builder merchants, fencing contractors and construction users all over the UK with a wide array of standard and bespoke fencing and decking products.
Commercial Director Paul Segel explained: “We are passionate about protecting the environment. It forms the bedrock of what our business is all about.”
“Our Smartawood™,” for example, contribute to environmental sustainability and is created using a proprietary process which in the most cost-effective method in the market is converting mixed plastic waste into durable products. Smartawood™ products offer far greater longevity, up to 120 years in many instances, and does not release captured carbon into the atmosphere. It’s not only great for external space such as seating or for enclosing public, but it is also a uniquely coloured option for a utilitarian recycled plastic.
“The more plastic we can stop going into landfill, incineration or shipping abroad the better. It’s a virtuous but challenging circle that requires concerted and coordinated efforts across the supply management,” said Paul.
Whilst marginally more expensive than timber, their significant increase in longevity more than offsets the initial outlay.
Paul went on “We are not as expensive as it looks. From panels to posts, there is a comprehensive range of products suited for all sorts of applications and environments.”
“It’s timber in the handling sense but that it can be easily worked with. It offers many benefits over timber that it doesn’t deteriorate, needs no coating or cut end structurally. Weatherproof and offers resistance, they can be cut to size at the factory to speed up and eliminate installation processes.”
“We pride ourselves on providing a friendly and responsive working and reliable experience. With little as you want whereas many of our competitors insist on full pallets. We also offer competitive discounts for trade accounts.”
“The fencing contractors we work with might not get the repeat business but those that have come on board with us are flying and seeing a big demand from customers who are becoming increasingly aware of environmental impacts.”
The firm picked up the Santander X Environmental challenge and is on track for a 40% uplift in turnover in 2025 from the 2.4 million reported in 2024.
“We were delighted to get that recognition from Santander X and that helped stir the direction we’re at now as a team.”
As a result, the company has joined the heart of the fast-track to X100 global community for its innovative approach to disposal. The company had to pitch in front of members of the Santander X, the global entrepreneurial network of the Santander, which supports SMEs, start-ups, scale-ups and entrepreneurs, with international programming, online courses, benefits and discounts, exclusive events and a programme of activities, community of experts and peer-to-peer exchange.
“It’s great that the challenge launch massive concern for the environment that helped raise commercial acceptance of what we do there that tick all the boxes.”
“We are extremely proud of those successes to date and don’t see that changing any time soon,” added Paul.
