APF 2026 – BRITISH OPEN FENCING COMPETITIONS OPEN FOR BOOKINGS
CAITHNESS TWINS GOING STRONG AFTER 39 YEARS
Two heads are better than one, so goes the adage and that could certainly be said about twins Hamish and Bruce Sinclair.
The duo, based at Latheronwheel and Dunbeath on the Caithness coast around 20 miles south of Wick, have been installing fencing in this rugged, treeless terrain for almost 40 years.
It takes hard graft and a hardy spirit to work on the land in this part of the world and that sums them up perfectly.
“We came from a farming family,” explained Hamish “so we understand the landscape and decided to set up our fencing businesses back in 1984 after selling the farm.
“We focus on agricultural and stock fencing and work with many of the big private estates in Caithness and Sutherland. We also occasionally do a bit of security fencing but a lot of our work is deer fencing. There’s a lot of deer up here and they sometimes need reigning in.
“You cannot beat working in the great outdoors. I love being out in the fresh air and the satisfaction you get from completing a job can’t be beaten however you’re only as good as your last job!” added Hamish.
Two heads don’t always see eye to eye and disagreements do happen but, according to Hamish “we always forget about it very quickly and move on. There’s the bigger picture to think about and ourconflicts are always short lived.”
The pair tend to work on their own individual projects but occasionally come together for the bigger, more demanding contracts.
Hamish went on “We both have tractors fitted with Bryce postknockers which are a powerful and invaluable machine that’s perfectly suited to the hard ground up here. We’ve tried other post hitters in the past but none come close to the deep and consistent impact of the good old Bryce.” Another adage, ‘keeping it in
the family’ also rings true about this unique partnership as Hamish explained.
“I’d be lost without my wife Evelyn who takes care of all of my admin and paperwork. Bruce is married to Evelyn’s sister so we’re a tightknit collective both as a family and businesses.”
Hamish, a former football referee and keen amateur player, concluded: “We all labour hard up here but the workload always gets a wee bit easier with some of the fencing innovations that are coming through such as the Bryce.
“We don’t have a website or a Facebook page as we tend to find that word of mouth works best. We must be doing something right if we’re still knocking in the posts and fixing up the netting after four decades.
“We’ve no plans to retire just yet!” added Hamish. You’d expect nothing less from this affable Caithness contractor!
