MAJOR INVESTMENT FOR WALFORD TIMBER
Walford Timber, one of the UK’s most established timber and fencing manufacturers, has announced a significant investment in an upgraded timber treatment plant at its Ross-on-Wye site.
The project marks a major step forward for the business, which has been manufacturing and treating timber products since 1945 and is widely recognised for its commitment to long-lasting, high-quality materials.
After 33 years of continuous use, Walford Timber’s previous high-pressure plant had reached the end of its operational life. As the company pressure-treats the majority of its products on-site to ensure durability, longevity, and performance, the plant is central to its manufacturing capability.
Work to replace the facility began in early September 2025, and has recently been completed. Once decommissioning of the old plant had been completed, work began on installing the new equipment, which included several improvements and upgrades.
The new plant is a comprehensive redesign, created to support today’s production requirements and future growth. Key enhancements include:
• Additional storage tanks for increased treatment capacity
• A more efficient site layout to improve workflow and reduce bottlenecks
• Modern pumping systems that reduce energy consumption and increase performance.
• Increased levels of automation to strengthen quality control, consistency and efficiency.
• The plant is expected to be among the most efficient treatment systems in the UK in terms of utilisation. These improvements will boost production capacity, reduce environmental impact, and further enhance the reliability of supply for customers.
The project also underlines Walford Timber’s long-standing commitment to sustainable, responsible manufacturing, a growing priority for both trade and domestic customers.
Walford Timber has a strong reputation for investment, innovation, and industry-leading treatment standards. The company was one of the founders of incising technology in the UK, enabling deeper preservative penetration in ground-contact timber and forming the foundation of its PermaTimber® range, a collection of long-life fencing products carrying recognised guarantees and BRE approval.
The company is also a WPA Benchmark-certified treater, demonstrating compliance with the highest industry standards through rigorous independent audits, and participates in the Arxada Treat-right® Warranty scheme, offering customers additional reassurance and traceability.
The new plant, which utilises Tanalith-E® preservative in both green and brown options, will integrate the latest technologies to continue delivering the durability, value and flexibility for which Walford Timber is known. Focussing predominantly on the treatment of outdoor timber products, it has been adapted to make switching between use classes seamless and economical.
Despite the scale of the investment, Walford Timber has ensured that the project has not disrupted service. The company significantly increased stock levels ahead of the works, engaged trusted external treatment providers to manage any unplanned requirements and implemented continuity planning across its Ross-on-Wye, Cheltenham and Chesham branches.
Customers, from homeowners to landscapers, commercial contractors, and stockists continued to receive the same levels of product availability and delivery reliability throughout the upgrade period.
This major investment reflects Walford Timber’s long-term commitment as a UK manufacturer of high quality durable timber products for decades to come. By modernising a key part of its production infrastructure, the company reinforces its heritage of quality, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
