ROBINIA IN VOGUE FOR PDR CONTRACTING
Peter Redgwell from PDR Contracting, winner of the 2023 AFI Fencing Agricultural & Equine Fencing Contractor’ award talks about his experiences of using Robinia Timber.
“It’s funny looking back. I’ve long been looking for a timber fencing material which will last longer than the 8 to 10 years we hope to achieve from UC4. The lack of reliability of Chestnut and issues with creosote led me to consider Robinia.
“I had seen Robinia Timber’s adverts and I guess a lack of awareness and knowledge meant I had overlooked it until recently. In fact, the more I looked into Robinia, the more I liked it. Its untreated natural durability and high density appealed to me as a strong post and removed the issue of cut areas being a weak point. Even discussing it with friends from Switzerland further reassured me as they hold it in high regard as a premium timber with excellent life span.
“My first opportunity to use it came after a potential new client was keen for a reliable timber option over metal for the aesthetic look, but had previously used questionable creosote materials, some bleaching out in 5-8yrs and cut testing showing very poor penetration.
“I contacted Jack at Robinia Timber and the client was further encouraged to try it when it costed out slightly cheaper than creosote. Jack proved to be very reliable to deal with, despite our order being short notice. They made the effort to get the material picked and shipped in time for us. The orders we’ve made since then have been just as reliable with good communication.
“There have been some learning ‘curves’ with Robinia. Much like working with metal, we’ve had to adapt techniques to suit its characteristics. Its rustic shape doesn’t initially suit every client. Too many seem to prioritise aesthetics over practicality, however if they insist on timber then they’re usually ready to consider Robinia,
“I have to say it’s a relief to have found a reliable timber that we can recommend, and a reliable company in Robinia Timber to supply it. I can see our use of Robinia continuing. Honest reliability seems to be a precious commodity these days and it’s always a pleasure to support anyone who can deliver that,” added Peter.
