WHITE HORSE FENCING’S SPIRIT OF ENTERPRISE
The spirit of enterprise runs strong with Stuart Ridley, founder and owner of Thirsk-based White Horse Fencing.
Stuart established the business in 1995 after several years of working as an agricultural contractor that including 15 years of sheep shearing.
“I carry out a mix of domestic, agricultural and industrial fencing,” explained Stuart “and operate right across North Yorkshire generally within a 50-mile range of my yard in Thirkleby.
“It’s generally just me but I often use subbies to help with the workload when demand dictates.
“Personally, I enjoy carrying out post and rail contracts but I’ve a solid pipeline of work that will see me busy until the end of the year.

“I can also offer security fencing, chain link, mesh systems, concrete posts and gravel boards, wooden or steel gates, paving, summer houses, sheds, stables and field shelters.
“We have a large client base ranging from farmers, equestrian yards, councils, builders and householders and also stock a wide variety of fencing from electric, timber to metal for supply only.
“A timber building side to the business was established in 2002. We have built stables for racehorse trainers through to single pony owners. Our timber sheds have been supplied to large building companies and small households alike. Any size of timber building can be quoted for.

Stuart operates two Quickfencer machines as well as Bryce Suma andProtech postknockers that can all be mounted to his MF tractor. He also has a Kanga and a Ditch Witch.
“Having the right equipment is essential,” he continued “as it offers peace of mind to my customers as well as allows me to deliver the best possible end result. Like most fencing contractors, I take a great pride in my work and there’s no better feeling than seeing a job completed to the highest of standards.”
Stuart has also recently established an additional business in the form of North Yorkshire Garden Buildings. Many homeowners are choosing to construct garden office buildings for homeworking in light of the recent Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns.

Stuart went on “I’ve seen a growing demand for these sorts of jobs. I’ve got a few booked to do in the coming months and post photos of them on my website.
“It’s a bit of diversification. Variety is the spice of life as they say and it’s nice to occasionally escape the clutches of fencing,” he added.
There’s also plans afoot to start a timber supply business in the near future.
“There’s a few details to iron out but it’s on the horizon and I feel sure that there’s a ready market for such a venture in these parts.
“Around a decade ago I started to buy timber in bulk from sawmills and suppliers such as Taylor Made,Woodbank and Charles Ransford. It makes sense from a cost point of view and means that the savings can be passed on to my customers.

“Getting hold of quality timber is critical. My suppliers are both reliable and focused on supplying a quality product. I always aim to use timberthat delivers what it promises in terms of strength and longevity. It all impacts positively on my reputation,” said Stuart who describes himself as a keen fan of horseracing.
“I carried out the fencing for the perimeter of Thirsk Racecourse and also built a timber house for a racehorse trainer about five years ago. Those were feathers in my cap!”
Stuart’s whitehorsefencing. com website contains a wealth ofinformation, testimonials and case studies about projects he’s carried out.
“It’s my shop window on the world and I aim to update it regularly with photos of completed jobs,” he added.
It seems that Stuart’s sense of enterprise will guarantee that White Horse Fencing is always in the running.
