BINNS FENCING BACK IN THE FAMILY WAY

BINNS FENCING BACK IN THE FAMILY WAY

Ownership of the company might have changed in recent months but it’s still very much business as usual for security specialists Binns Fencing Ltd based at Potters Bar in Hertfordshi.

Adam Binns, grandson of John Binns who founded the business 86 years ago in 1937, acquired a majority shareholding earlier this year following a period as part of the Zaun Group.

“It’s steady as she goes and nothing much will change,” explained Adam “although we are looking to expand into the provision of security
fencing for new markets such as data centres and distribution hubs to build on the progress we’ve made in those specific areas.”

Binns Fencing’s existing lines of business are the epitome of stability with major customers such as the Ministry of Justice, MoD and utility giants such as Thames Water and Severn Trent Water being longstanding clients.

“We’ve worked with the Ministry of Justice for instance,” added Adam “for over 50 years and have built up an immense amount of knowledge, goodwill and trust in that time that ensures we are the ‘go to guys’ for their particular security fencing needs.

“We’ve got a workforce of 48 with 12 fencing crews working right across the UK at any given time. Many of our staff have been with us for over 30 years which tells its own story in terms of the experience we can bring to the table.

“All of our business tends to come from word of mouth which puts us in a privileged position and we’ve built up a reputation for reliability in terms of our services and products since the business started way back in the late 1930s.

“That’s not to say we will ever rest of our laurels. We’re well aware that there are markets out there that will benefit from the range and types of security fencing that we supply and install as well as the bank of invaluable knowledge that can make projects a reality,” added Adam.

Binns Fencing retained a great deal of autonomy during what was a successful spell as part of the Zaun family. He went on: “It is considered a strong move for both companies and will allow both to focus on individual growth and development in the coming years. Whilst both businesses have benefitted and flourished since 2015 when Zaun acquired the majority stake in Binns, there has always been some trepidation from the market about the link and possible conflict. The new structure will remove these questions and allow each business to develop relationships further with customers and suppliers.

“The acquisition comes on the back of good performance for our business, with the company in a strong position for both the immediate and longer-term future. Personally, I am delighted to see the company my grandfather started back in the ownership of the Binns family and think we should all be excited about the future of the company.

“We will be looking to continue drive the company forward whilst maintaining the values and principles that have been ingrained in the business over the last 86 years.

“Like so many businesses out there we were hit by the 2008 recession but we bounced back within two years and have built steadily on gains ever since

A.J. Binns was formed when John Binns set up business in Great Marlborough Street, central London. As demand for Binns’ products grew, the company divided into two sections to accommodate the specialist knowledge required for the diversity of its range. A.J. Binns catered for the newly developing
sports and leisure industry, whilst Binns Fencing Limited rapidly grew to become the market leader in the installation of High Security Fencing.

As a result of working for many high security establishments, Binns decided to apply their experience and develop their own anti-climb system, Flexible Security Topping (FST®), which is currently one of the most secure fence toppings available. FST® has been installed in HM Prisons, Secure Hospitals, Young Offender Institutions and Immigration Centres throughout the UK and worldwide.

Adam, who has worked within the business since 2001, continued “We will survey, advise on design, develop and install fences, gates and barrier solutions for any type and size of site and for any level of security.

“We also retain a strong community focus by supporting and sponsoring a number of rugby and sports teams around the locality whenever and wherever we can,” he concluded.

It’s clear that this trusted firm is in safe hands with a focus on steady growth and it will continue to keep many institutions and sites across the nation as secure as it’s possible to be.
