JOB SATISFACTION FOR ISLE OF MAN FENCER
Coming from solid Isle of Man farming stock, Adam Huxham knows a thing or two about fencing on agricultural land.
It’s a big part of working life for Adam, 34, who hails from the village of Ballaugh on the north of the island. As a self-employed contractor since 2008, Adam knows plenty about domestic and commercial fencing too.
“There’s always been plenty of work for me over the past 12 years right across the Isle of Man. I’ve around 30 regular, reliable customers from across the farming community here with many others, such as homeowners, who I might see less regularly.
“The recent coronavirus pandemic has thrown a spoke in the wheels to a degree but I guess we are all in the same boat. We need to work together in isolation to get through this if that makes sense.
“I’ll be spending 3 or 4 weeks at home and will use that time to repair and install fencing around my land.
“Having been bought up on a farm, I can appreciate the role fencing plays in agriculture and the importance of getting it right. That gives me an advantage when it comes to agricultural and stock fencing.
“There are 2 or 3 specialist fencing contractors on the Isle of Man with lots of work to go around although, like everywhere, we have our cowboys,” added Adam who occasionally hires additional hands during busy summer months.
He also knows his way around the plethora of mechanical aids available to the modern fencing contractor. He currently has a trackmounted Protech postknocker and a Profencer but has, in the past, worked with a Quickfencer and a Bryce.
“All have their merits but I’m very happy with what I’ve got right now. They represent big costs for a small business but they have delivered a return on investment far sooner than I ever imagined,” said Adam.
When it comes to job satisfaction Adam knows exactly what it’s all about: “I do thank my lucky stars that I’m able to do what I do.
“The satisfaction you get from seeing a completed job or to receive praise from a customer cannot be quantified. It makes all of the hard work worthwhile.
“You can’t beat being your own boss and working outside even in this era of uncertainty. I’ve been reared in the great outdoors and it’s where I work best!
