Attending last year’s eventful AFI Timber in Ground Contact Conference in Newark proved to be an inspired decision for the directors of UK-wide farming and fencing specialists McVeigh Parker.
Stuart Mills of McVeigh Parker explained: “We witnessed the backlash from contractors to the longevity of treated timber. With the impending European and Irish ban on creosoted timber in April 2023, it seems to be only a matter of time before the UK follows suit. There’s a real need for alternative solutions. We were delighted therefore to meet the team behind the new DURA² timber range.”
During a visit to the mill soon afterwards, they saw for themselves the attention to detail throughout the whole operation, reinforcing the production credentials, and they immediately ordered the first consignment loads.
“It’s perhaps not an ideal time to launch a new product with round timber being in short supply due to the war in the Ukraine and high demand, but the aim is to make people aware of the product with an initial controlled release. The feedback from our opening marketing campaign has been very positive and we’re very confident that, once the product has been trialled and accepted, production and sales will increase,” added Stuart.

The unique DURA² timber patented procedure starts with timber selection, with slow-grown wood carefully selected from sustainable woodlands. Once felled it goes through an initial controlled drying process, then impregnated to saturation point with the improved treatment agent. After the first treatment, the timber goes through a deep drying process and is then treated once again. This double-treatment process provides the strongest protection and the most durable treated softwood timber for fencing. It is sustainable, environmentally friendly, and is a cost-effective alternative to creosoted timber. This new process extends the life span of timber to 20 years and more.
Fellow director Chris Hambridge added: “As part of our company strategy, we are always on the lookout for innovative and market-leading products and we are very pleased to have been chosen as the UK supplier. We look forward to supplying DURA² timber products to stockists, contractors and landowners alike.”
One of McVeigh Parker’s other innovative products featured recently on the BBC. In an episode of Rick Stein’s Cornwall, farmers Matt and Pippa Smith spoke about their venison farm which was fenced off with Clipex and Xfence back in 2016.
“Judging by the footage Rick must have noticed that the fence is still looking as good as the day it was erected!” added Stuart
