STEADY AWAY FOR DORSET’S DAVIS BROTHERS

Steady progress has been the hallmark of Dorset-based Davis Fencing since their inception in 2015. The business, which now employs three, operates across southern England with a growing customer base encompassing the agricultural sector as well as a number of notable civil engineering clients and projects including the Southern and Wessex water companies and the MOD.

Founder Louis Davis, a former gamekeeper, explained: “My career in fencing really came out of nowhere. I didn’t expect to enter this industry but now I thoroughly enjoy the challenges it throws up every working day. I did do a spot of fencing when I was employed as a gamekeeper and that eventually became my stock in trade.

A big part of that enjoyment comes from employing my brother Jordan who handles our ever-growing fleet of machinery and Michael Carter who is the key operator of our two Protech RG30 postknockers. Those guys have played a big part in our success,” added Louis.

Key operational investments in new machinery over the past decade have coincided with Davis Fencing increasing the range and scope of services it could offer.

Louis, 32, went on “I focused on domestic fencing for the first couple of years but things really started to take off when I purchased a Protech P18+ postknocker in 2017. I brought a digger to mount it on and it changed the business completely by opening up the ‘civils and agricultural’ market.

At Davis Fencing, our steady growth hasn’t just been about working hard, it’s been about working smart and staying laser-focused on areas where we truly add value.

We made a deliberate choice to step away from domestic fencing in order to specialise in the commercial, agricultural and civil engineering sectors. By doing this, we’ve been able to offer more efficient, more capable and more professional service to clients who rely on us to deliver under pressure.

In 2018 I added a Skidsteer and two Sololoaderers following soon after. The clearance side of the business then started to take off. Last year Jordan cleared over 200 acres of rhododendrons!” added Louis who also regularly competes in some of the UK’s biggest fencing competitions.

“I started competing when I was part of Young Farmers where we regularly competed at nationals. Since leaving YF, I have notched up some notable results in recent times at Tornado in 2024, and recently took 4th place with Matt Cooper at the APF show.

You learn so much at these events and my longtime association with the Young Farmers organisation recently led to me becoming a judge at their 2025 South East area fencing competition.

It was good fun and great to see the next generation of fencer in action. The standards were high albeit with room for improvement. Some of those competing were as young as 14 and it’s safe say that the future of our industry is in good hands,” he added.

Davis Fencing provides a lesson to all as to what can be achieved with a bit of risk taking and a positive spirit and you can be that Louis’s hardworking ethic and desire to ‘get involved’ will continue to help shape the fencers of the future.
