5000m Otter Fencing Project at a Cotswolds Fishery
Benny from Hatts Group and Sam from SG Fencing recently completed an extensive otter fencing project at a fishery in the Cotswolds.
The site, which consists of six lakes, required a secure perimeter solution to prevent otters from accessing fish and help protect the fishery for the long term.
In total, the team installed 5,000 metres of boundary fencing using Tornado Otter Fencing, Cranked Otter Brackets, and the Pro-Strain® system.
The Challenge
As with many large-scale fencing projects, the team encountered a variety of ground conditions throughout the installation.
The fishery is situated on a former gravel pit, creating challenging sections with gravel-rich ground and large rocks that needed to be extracted before installation could continue.
Other areas had soft and wet ground conditions. The compact design of the Pro-Strain system and Pro-Strain i-Post®’s meant that more materials could be loaded onto the post knocker, reducing the need for multiple trips across the site and minimising travel over difficult terrain.
To overcome the soft ground conditions, the contractors used additional breast plates where required to provide extra stability.
Benny commented:
“The extra breast plates have worked well, and the lads have got on well with it.”
The Solution
The customer emphasised the need for durability and longevity. Given the site’s multiple lakes, moisture levels in the ground were a key consideration.
For this reason, the Pro-Strain system was selected over traditional timber alternatives.
The Pro-Strain system provided a robust, long-lasting solution capable of withstanding the environmental conditions. Its flexibility also allowed the contractors to adapt the installation to the challenges encountered across the site.
Sam commented on the versatility of the system, saying:
“We’ve enjoyed using it and it’s very customisable to different problems you’d get.”
The Result
The completed 5,000m otter fence now provides a secure boundary around the fishery.
By combining Tornado Otter Fencing, Cranked Otter Brackets, and the Pro-Strain system, they delivered a reliable fencing solution that overcame challenging ground conditions while meeting the customer’s long-term requirements.
