ULTIMATE GUIDE TO SCHOOL FENCING, GATES AND HARDWARE BY FIRST FENCE
Ensuring that schools are safe is really important, and security fencing and gates can play a huge role
However, not only do we have to consider the perimeter fencing and access point, but also the gate safety hardware to go with it! At First Fence, there are a range of fencing, gate and gate hardware products available, to help you best secure your school.
Why are fencing and gates important on school grounds?
Probably the most important role is to keep the school environment secure. By providing a safe space for students to learn and staff to teach. Setting up a perimeter can stop children from leaving the area unattended while also acting as a deterrent to unauthorised entry.
Additionally, security fencing can keep the school area safe from vandalism and theft. As well as manage pedestrian traffic flow.
As stated in Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, (RoSPA) code of conduct – fencing is required to have gaps over 89mm, to make sure that children can’t get trapped (this includes gates). It also indicates that no gap less than 12mm should be present around a gate set. This can be achieved with First Fence adjustable hinges and the APS Hydraulic closer which also has a RoSPA compliant closing speed
From palisade and mesh fencing, to railings and barriers, First Fence has a range of products suitable for your school.
In addition to security fencing and gates, you must consider the best gate hardware for your school gates, to provide an all-round security solution. There are three fencing and gate ranges commonly used in School environments, these are;
Mesh fencing and gates
Mesh fencing is most commonly used to set up a perimeter around game courts, sports stadiums, and school areas. It’s also considered to be a strong and reliable security option while maintaining a ‘stylish’ and aesthetically pleasing design. With a variety of mesh types including; V-Mesh, Rebound, Twin, Safetop and more!
A cost-effective solution, with options to powder coat in a range of colours. First Fence also supplies a range of matching gates, with gate hardware that fits on these gates to provide additional security to the school.
Railing systems and gates
Railing systems are a good choice for securing public locations, especially when there are children around. Besides being a safe and secure fencing option, railing systems are considered to be aesthetically pleasing.
Unlike palisade or mesh fencing, railing systems are best suited for areas which require high visibility, but a medium to a low level of security is enough
First Fence provides matching gate options for whatever railing system you choose. Don’t forget we also have our range of environmentally friendly railings, that are great addition to any school.

Palisade fencing and gates
Palisade fencing remains one of the most popular security fencing options. Whether it’s used for commercial properties, industrial sites, or schools.
Although palisade fencing was designed to act as a theft deterrent, with the option to powder coat to match the surroundings of school grounds, it can be aesthetically pleasing while providing that intimidating look. With matching single and double leaf gates available, it’s a great solution for schools.
How to increase security and safety with the right gate hardware
For locations like schools, you must find the safest hinges and closers as well as a secure lock.
When choosing a lock, there’s a lot to think about. You have to think about what the gate is made of, how big it is, its style, how much it’s used, and even how far it is from the gate post.
In schools, the lock has to work well for the gate and be easy for the staff to use. Most importantly, it has to keep the students safe.
For example, some gates might need emergency exits, but you don’t want students using these exits all the time. It’s important to think about how each gate might be used so you can choose the right lock.
What about self-closing gates?
It’s crucial not to choose just any gate closer, especially for school gates used by children. There are specific safety suggestions to make sure these gates are as safe as can be. RoSPA provides some recommendations specifically for gates used by children in public areas.
One gate closer that follows the recommendations is the APS Hydraulic closer, as it ensures a non-reducing gap throughout the closing, has adjustable closing and latching speed (available to purchase through First Fence).
Are there any extra security measures that schools can take?
One major worry is gates that might fall. In school areas, there are many gates, and some may not be maintained frequently. That means these gates might fall during bad weather or if someone pushes them.
The British Standard BSEN12604 suggests that swing gates should either have three hinges or a gate tether to stop them from falling. These safety measures help avoid accidents if the top hinge breaks.
A Gate Restrainer (available at First Fence) is small and fits between the gate and the post. If the top hinge fails and the gate starts falling, this device kicks in to stop it.
A strong, stainless-steel rope can make a big difference, preventing a scary accident from happening. Plus, it’s really easy to install!
