A PASSION FOR FENCING

It’s always great to talk to someone who holds a passion for what they do in life, and Nick Wiltshire of Nottinghamshire-based NW Countryside Services definitely falls into that category.
Having started his business back in April 2015, Nick is just about to celebrate his ten-year anniversary. His enthusiasm for the job has never diminished in that time.
“I’m still as passionate about fencing today as I was when I started out,” explained Nick. “I genuinely love what I do.”
Those positive vibes are reflected in the success of his firm, and he’s looking forward to 2025 with a healthy order book for contracts across the East Midlands from his base in Southwell… and further afield.
*“We’ve got plenty of good projects in front of us this year, including work on Humberside and North Yorkshire, so it’s very encouraging for my team that includes myself and three subcontractors. You can’t dig every hole on your own, and a big thank you to all the guys. We are a strong team, and I am very grateful for their high standards of work.
“It’s vital, however, to be organised and communicate regularly with both existing and potential customers. I’m very mindful of that. You can quickly lose control of your workload if you are not diligent and consistent.
“I think those qualities are appreciated by my customers. They recognise that sense of organisation, and that engenders trust. It also helps to do a good job, and we retain the same commitment to each and every customer regardless of the size of the contract.
“It’s fair to say that as time goes by and the reputation grows, then demand for our services increases. Life tends to get a bit easier even if you’ve still got to put in the hard graft.”*
“Around 70% of our workload is for agricultural and equestrian customers,” Nick continued, “with the remainder being made up of domestic contracts, which regularly include the installation of driveway gates.
*“Since we were last profiled in Fencing News back in December 2021, we’ve seen a gradual increase in the former.
“We have all of the relevant qualifications and training, and that provides peace of mind for the folk we work for.”*
Talking of training, Nick took part in last year’s AFI training day.
“It was very good, and I learnt a lot. I’m looking forward to future events and feel the AFI does a lot of fine work in promoting our industry and improving our skillsets.”
When it comes to those essential pieces of machinery that ease the working day, Nick has invested in a Sany digger three years ago.
*“It’s a very handy piece of kit, and it made sense to purchase it. These are big investments for businesses like mine.
“Our Protech Evo tracked post driver continues to deliver, although I might just upgrade it over the course of this year.
“We also have a Kanga that makes an appearance from time to time to earn its corn.
“I’m a big fan of the Perrett post plate. I use it regularly and wouldn’t be without it. When it comes to driving in posts, it just makes the job safer and quicker and doesn’t damage the posts.”*
“Suppliers to businesses like mine have to be reliable and be prepared to go above and beyond. With that in mind, I’ve had a longstanding relationship with David Musson Fencing Ltd in Melton Mowbray. I’m only too happy to sing their praises!”
“Overall, I feel that fencing is in a good place with good people driving the industry forward. Onward and upward, and here’s to a great 2025 for all those hardworking fencing contractors out there!” he concluded.
Positive words indeed. With Nick’s passion for the job, you feel the NW Countryside Services success story will only continue.
