It’s been all change and all go for business partners Bob Ball and Brett Smith of Warwickshire-based Southam Automation Ltd.

During the surreal era of Covid, Brett and Bob have made significant strides forward with their Panelmaster machines, helping to service soaring domestic demand for feather edge fencing panels.

They also moved into a new 3000 square foot workshop facility in Fenny Compton, near Banbury, earlier this year, taking on two new staff in the process with plans afoot for more recruitment.

“It’s truly liberating to now have that extra space, improved facilities and the resources to grow the business,” explained Brett “and it sets us up perfectly for what we hope will be another fantastic year.

“I hope to hit the road a bit more and get talking to customers old and new about their requirements. After all the Covid restrictions it will be good to get out and about and meet customers face to face.

“Business has been brisk over the past 18 months and we have a solid pipeline of orders from fencing, landscaping and building merchants right across the UK going into the new year but, like any business, we are always keen to talk to new customers.

“The moving process took a few weeks to complete whilst continuing to manufacture the Panelmasters. It was a hectic time but we got through it successfully without any major hitches.

“We haven’t suffered too much with the much-publicised supply chain problems affecting other manufacturing firms as most of our components are made in the UK but any issues we have come across have been resolved,” added Brett who, together with Bob, has been involved in the industry for well over three decades.

The Panelmaster machines are also continuing to evolve with constant refinements.

Brett added: “We firmly believe that we build the best machines available in the marketplace when it comes to the manufacture of both bespoke and standardised fencing panels.”

That confidence is reflected in the experiences of its many customers including Main Line Timber who operate out of Daventryand Marton.

Tim Keeves, Manager of the Marton branch of Main Line Timber, commented: “Our Panelmaster is helping us service the domestic boom in demand for fencing panels. It has allowed us to increase our production capacity significantly as well as have unprecedented quality control.

“It’s also a great machine from a health and safety perspective with checks and balances incorporated into the process to maximise the safety of users,” added Tim. Millions of high-quality fencing panels around gardens up and down the country are testament to the innovation, dedication and hard work of Southam Automation with the business recently reaching the notable landmark of having manufactured 250 Panelmasters.

“A recent Government budget initiative also offers the chance to gain almost 20% off the cost of investing in new construction-related machinery which is another great reason to find out more about our innovations but we would urge interested parties to check with their accountants for more details.

“The Panelmasters are going from strength to strength and here’s to 2022 seeing us continue the momentum!” concluded Brett.

This affable Warwickshire duo really are at the cutting edge of fencing automation in the UK and long may that continue,
