RECOGNITION FOR SAMSON FENCING WITH AFI AWARD

Dumfries-based fencing contractor Rory Samson was a happy man at the recent AFI Awards. Rory’s firm, Samson Fencing, picked up the award for Agricultural & Equine Contractor of the Year.

The judges’ appraisal was definitive:

“The AFI One project stood out for its remarkable ingenuity and the ability to overcome incredibly harsh terrain. The winning team demonstrated exceptional design and problem-solving skills, particularly in their innovative reuse of metal materials, which not only fulfilled the project requirements but also exceeded expectations.

“The judges were particularly struck by the quality and resilience required to achieve such outstanding results in challenging ground conditions—where the demands for a secure and enduring fence are critical, and especially by the health and safety considerations of the tick season for workers, and the environmental consideration for nesting birds.”

High praise indeed for a business established in 2017 by Rory together with his father Jim and brother Duncan.

“We were absolutely delighted to pick up this prestigious accolade,” explained Rory, “and it’s recognition for the hard work and diligence that we put into everything we do.

“We specialise in metal fencing, which is all about strength and longevity for the customer, but also delivers a long fence life that we know will be there for years to come. This was a major factor in the AFI award.

“We are dedicated and always excited to leave farms in a better state than when we arrived, and that ethos is reflected in a very busy and healthy order book that stretches six months ahead.

“My dad Jim is a key part of the team. He’s been involved in farming all his life and has taken well to the challenge. With Duncan on board too from the outset, it makes Samson Fencing a real family affair.

“We’re a close-knit business and always endeavour to give 100% for every customer. We operate two post knockers, with our veteran Mitsubishi machine soon going in for an upgrade after seven years of sterling service. Earlier this year, we invested in a second machine that delivers a bit more impact.”

Rory is also a keen and successful participant in the ever-growing area of fencing competition, having achieved notable placements, including second place in the Scotsheep contest back in June and top spot in the Ireland fencing championships.

*“I compete alongside Duncan and we both enjoy the challenge. We are constantly trying to edge a bit closer to perfection, and these competitions are a great testing ground for new and innovative ways of doing the job.

That said, it’s always great to win. We are very competitive and go into every event believing we can triumph,”* added Rory, who has been taking part regularly in events since his debut at the 2018 Fencing News event at the Driffield Show.

Rory, together with Jim and Duncan, are clearly getting the formula right, and you suspect the recent AFI award will be the first of many for this ambitious Scottish fencing contractor.
