HOW A BESPOKE METAL FENCING SOLUTION DELIVERED STRENGTH, SPEED, AND SUBTLETY
STAYING SAFE ON SITE
Here, Mark Earles, Business Development Manager OPE at Makita, looks at the health and safety considerations that should always be factored in when selecting power tools and machinery.
Petrol powered tools and machinery are the go-to for many, as they have historically offered the flexibility and high-power needed to tackle more demanding applications. However, they also pose a number of health and safety risks that should not be overlooked.
Petrol engine machines can be noisy, produce higher vibration levels and emit fumes that are harmful to both the operator and the environment. However, by opting for cordless machines these risks are eliminated.
Advancements in battery technology mean that today’s cordless models deliver output that can genuinely rival petrol engine and corded alternatives. Powered by lithium-ion batteries, leading cordless models offer long run times and short charge times, so operators can work for extended periods, disruption free. For example, Makita’s XGT range will charge in just 28 minutes (for 2.5Ah batteries) up to 45 minutes (for 4.0Ah batteries). What’s more, its 18V LXT range can be charged in as little as 22 minutes (for 3.Ah batteries) up to 55 minutes (for 6.0Ah batteries).
With cordless machines, there is no need to transport fuel to and around site and no petrol fumes are emitted during use, making them safer for the operator and the environment. Battery powered machines are also quieter and emit considerably lower vibration levels compared to petrol alternatives, meaning users are protected against vibration-related health problems such as Vibration White Finger.
To improve on-site productivity further, opt for cordless machines with a brushless motor. As there are no carbon brushes causing friction, no energy is lost through heat production, extending run times further. Even when used in hard industrial applications or over extended periods of time, the motor’s design prevents the tool from overheating. As such, wear and tear is reduced, eliminating the need for ongoing maintenance. Brushless motors also produce lower vibration levels, further improving the safety of users.
