You get the distinct impression that working for Noel Lynch of Lynch Fencing Services would be a pleasure. This no- nonsense Irishman calls it as he sees it and is clearly as committed as any employer could be to the welfare of his workforce.
Based in County Kilkenny, around halfway between Dublin and Cork, Lynch Fencing Services started up six years ago and focuses on agricultural, stock, equine and security fencing generally within a one-hour radius.
“All of my team are in their 40s so they don’t like travelling more than they have to,” explained Noel “although I will occasionally go further afield if it’s for an established and trusted customer.”
That team currently numbers four, generally operating as two teams of two, with additional ‘subbies’ bought in during busy periods. It’s obvious that Noel puts great store on building a strong rapport within his team.
“I’ve worked in enough companies where this isn’t the case so it’s important that we get the spirit right in the team. No egos. They wouldn’t fit in anyway here! We’re a tightknit bunch who all get on well.
“I need a crew that I know I can trust and that’s exactly what I’ve got,” added Noel who also runs a dairy farm with 70 cows.
Lynch Fencing Services get a lot of work from Ireland’s Office of Public Works which sees Noel and his team get up close and personal with a lot of the country’s architectural heritage.
He went on “We’re often working around old castles, historical sites and other ‘touristy’ places and it’s vital we are both very careful in what we do and able to install fencing that remains as inobtrusive as possible. Our work in these types of places needs to mould into the landscape.
“We use Tornado for the vast majority of our work. It’s reliable and works. A lot of cheaper wires will break and crack and it just becomes a false economy. It pays to invest in the best sometimes.
“We use a few very good suppliers and I have a similar quality commitment when it comes to the machinery we use out in the field. We get our post drivers from Vector in Kilkenny. We normally change them every two years and over spec because you never know what’s around the corner.
“Vector has proven to be a very reliable partner much like Solo Fencing Systems based in the UK who supply all sorts of fencing equipment. Their unrolling machines really do the job and I would wholeheartedly recommend them.
“I’ll always be committed to innovating. Anything that makes the job easier for my team and I gets a big tick from me!”
Lynch Fencing Services has a Facebook presence but is far more active on Twitter (or X as it’s now known!) with a healthy following, regular concise and informative posts and thousands of impressions as a result. In fact @LynchFencing is a pretty good example of how to get it spot on to anyone wanting to set up on this social media platform.
Noel went on: “Word gets out about what you can do and we’re certainly not chasing work. If we quote on a job and if someone undercuts us then so be it. Let them use the lad from around the corner with daddy’s tractor!”
Noel is one savvy operator. Five years in the advertising sales department of the Irish Farming Journal has taught him to spot the b******t a mile off and he’s determined that honesty and integrity permeate every aspect of his business.
“We’re not here to make a fortune,” he concluded, “we just want to make an honest living and enjoy what we do. Teamwork makes the dream work!”
