Combining Structural Performance with Landscape Design

Combining Structural Performance with Landscape Design

Retaining walls are no longer viewed solely as engineering structures designed to hold back soil.

Increasingly, landscape architects, developers, fencing contractors and civil engineers expect them to create usable land, enhance surrounding landscapes and integrate seamlessly with boundary treatments while delivering long-term structural performance.

Responding to this demand, Elite Precast Concrete has developed Retainer-Rock®, a modular retaining wall system that combines the strength of precast concrete with the appearance of natural stone or a contemporary smooth finish.

Manufactured to BS EN 15258, Retainer-Rock offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional cast in-situ concrete retaining walls. Available in Cobblestone and Liscio Stone finishes, the system allows retaining structures to complement both traditional and modern developments. Standard blocks can be used to construct straight or curved walls, giving designers greater flexibility without increasing installation complexity.

Retainer-Rock is designed to support modern landscape schemes where challenging topography often requires level changes to maximise available space. The system enables the creation of terraces, gardens, parking areas, pedestrian routes and public spaces while helping developers retain valuable land.

Its dry-laid modular construction allows faster installation than conventional masonry or cast concrete walls, reducing the need for extensive formwork and lengthy curing periods. The modular design also makes future extensions or alterations easier, making it well suited to phased developments.

The system also complements a wide range of boundary treatments. On housing developments, schools, commercial sites and infrastructure projects, Retainer-Rock provides a stable retained level for timber fencing, steel railings, acoustic barriers and security fencing while offering a more attractive finish than conventional concrete retaining structures.

Alongside its visual appeal, Retainer-Rock has been engineered for long-term structural performance. Its interlocking precast concrete units can incorporate a tie-rod jointing system where required, allowing standard single-depth blocks to construct retaining walls up to approximately 4.5 metres high, subject to engineering design and site conditions. This approach helps maximise usable land while reducing excavation requirements.

The system has already been used across residential and infrastructure projects. At Sandy Oaks Residential Park, a 2.5-metre-high Retainer-Rock wall was installed to protect homes and gardens from potential landslips while blending with the surrounding woodland through its natural stone finish.

Retainer-Rock has also been specified for the £10 million upgrade of Dronfield Wastewater Treatment Works, where multiple retaining walls were installed by CPC Civils for Yorkshire Water. The textured finish helped integrate the structures into the surrounding environment while delivering the durability and low maintenance required for critical infrastructure.

Manufactured under controlled factory conditions, the precast concrete system reduces waste, improves quality consistency and minimises on-site operations. Combined with its durability and low maintenance requirements, this helps lower whole-life costs for asset owners.

As retaining walls become increasingly prominent landscape features, Retainer-Rock demonstrates how structural performance and visual appeal can be successfully combined, offering a practical solution for developments where engineering, landscaping and boundary design must work together.
