Why Robinia Timber Has Become a First Choice for RMH Services
RMH Services is a Gloucestershire-based fencing company which teamed up with White Fencing Contracts Ltd nearly three years ago.
Our work takes us across the Cotswolds and further afield. It’s run by Ross Heaven and Hugo White who have more than 30 years experience.
As a company we undertake a broad range of work including fencing, groundworks, clearing works, topping, hedge cutting etc. Fencing is a significant part of the business and focuses on equestrian, livestock and agricultural installations.
Over the past few years, we have used Robinia timber on a number of larger fencing contracts.
It was initially a product we were interested in because of its natural durability and suitability for projects where the environmental impact of the materials was an important consideration. Having now installed a reasonable amount of it, we can judge it much more from the point of view of a contractor than simply from its specification.
One of the things we noticed fairly quickly was how well the posts install. On the projects where we have used Robinia, we have had very little trouble with posts splitting or breaking during installation.
Environmental considerations are becoming increasingly relevant to the work we undertake, and Robinia has been useful on projects where the use of traditionally treated timber was less desirable.
Much of our work is carried out on estates and rural properties, and fencing can sometimes be required alongside waterways, woodland, conservation areas or other environmentally sensitive locations.
In those circumstances, having a naturally durable timber option that does not rely on the same chemical treatment as conventionally treated timber is a real bonus.
From a contractor’s perspective, we have really appreciated not having to deal with some of the issues associated with heavily treated posts, when handling and installing them.
We have used it on several substantial contracts now, so our view of the product is based on what we have experienced on site rather than simply what is claimed about it.
As with any natural timber, there is variation between individual pieces, but overall we have been pleased with the consistency of the material and, particularly, the lack of splitting and breakage during installation.
There is also an increasing interest from customers in understanding the materials being used on their land. Being able to offer an alternative to chemically treated timber is therefore useful, particularly when the fencing is going into a location where environmental considerations are high on the agenda.
Our experience with Robinia Timber has been very positive. It combines excellent installation characteristics with natural durability and strong environmental credentials, while avoiding some of the practical issues associated with chemically treated timber.
We have been sufficiently impressed with how it performs in practice that we are actively recommending it to our customers.
