Up for a Challenge?
Into cycling? Up for the challenge of a lifetime? If the answer to both of these questions is a ‘yes’ then Lewis Knox of Perthshire-based Knoxfield wants to hear from you!
Lewis and a few of his fencing friends are looking for cyclists operating within the fencing industry from all over the UK & Ireland to join their team of 8-12 riders to take part in a testing, sponsored cycle ride from Edinburgh to Paris to raise much needed funds for MND (Motor neurone disease) research.
“We’ll call it The Flying Fencers,” exclaimed Lewis “and it’s all about raising money for a very good cause that supports the ‘My Name’5 Doddie Foundation’ named after Scottish lock Doddie Weir who died in 2022 after suffering with MND.
“The event is in its fifth year and is organised by former Scotland rugby international Rob Wainwright and ’round the world’ Scottish cyclist Mark Beaumont. The plan is to leave Edinburgh on 18th February and ride south over the next two days and deliver the first of two international match balls to the 2027 Six Nations rugby union clash between England and Italy on Saturday February 20th before cycling from Twickenham over to Paris to provide the match ball for the France v Scotland match 24 hours later.
“We are looking to pull a cycling team together with riders from all four home nations and will be operating on a relay basis to get us to our destinations so you don’t need to be a Tour De France specialist to take part!
“With several stops along the route for teams to change over, refuel and meet people who have come out to support this ever-growing event, there is expected to be up to 500 riders taking part in the event.
“We are on the lookout for anyone in our industry interested in joining us on our epic quest and indeed anyone who could help out with fundraising ideas, marketing and promotion to boost our efforts,” added Lewis.
